Gorgeous little spot at the top of the High St hill
Claire Wiltshire 28 September 2009
There is certainly more than one way to cook an egg, but if "poached or fried" is getting a bit old, rest assured some brekkie spots are infusing their dishes with a bit more imagination. Look past the tacky horse ornaments and paintings at Northcote's Palomino and you'll find some absolute gems on the menu.
Soft-boiled eggs served in cute little egg cups are a favourite and come with your choice of extra-tasty sides. The baked beans are a real treat: made from home-soaked red kidney beans, they're almost tex-mex style, set off with a sprinkle of subtle Persian fetta. Other sides include pancetta and chorizo, or avocado, but the rosemary mushrooms with tallegio are especially hard to go past.
Palomino's spinach & baked eggs is another taste sensation. Cooked in its own dish, the egg melts into baby spinach and tangy fetta and is topped with a bread crumb crunch and the strong flavour of fennel seeds. The modest serve of sweet pumpkin sour dough is a perfect accompaniment. Gluten intolerants may choose polenta in place of bread for any egg dish.
But if eggs aren't your bag, there are plenty of basics on the menu, including house granola with yogurt and fruit as well as the trusty bowl of coco pops. Blueberry bagels or the sourdough with hommus and tomato are also highly recommended.
This gorgeous little spot at the top of the High St hill is home to what many loyal locals believe to be the best cup of coffee in Northcote, and they may not be far wrong. Get in close to opening (8:30 am) to beat the inevitable rush. This cafe takes things in its stride but rush hour wait times can be on the "relaxed" side. It's also a lovely time of day to enjoy the window seat, as the sun streams in through huge front windows and another lazy Northcote weekend awakens.
