The aptly named Min Lokal (Swedish for My Local) is one of a growing number of cafés cropping up off Melbourne's main drags. Min Lokal is housed in the former Wild Flour bakery on George Street, in the heart of Fitzroy's residential area.
Min Lokal is the café version of your local corner pub, with its large communal tables, laidback service and ever-growing host of regulars. The bulk of its customers come from the surrounding apartment blocks, terrace houses and warehouse conversions, as well as nearby businesses.
The concept behind the café is simple: one small room; two communal tables; a smattering of rustic, outdoor seating; and a blackboard full of goodies. The menu is divided into breakfast dishes, claypots, salads and sandwiches, with four or five options available for each. Dishes range from eight to thirteen dollars, and there are plenty of vegetarian choices on offer.
The food at Min Lokal is as delicious as it is reasonably priced. Twelve dollars will get you a quartered kransky sausage with a perfectly poached egg, roasted chat potatoes and baby beetroot, and a side of horseradish cream. For a dollar more, you could try the excellent shakshuka claypot of eggs, tomato, coriander, caper paste and labna. The sandwiches are a steal (and by no means small) at just eight dollars.
Despite barely being open three months, word has already gotten out about Min Lokal's excellent Supreme coffee. On workday mornings it's not uncommon to see a takeaway coffee queue snaking out the door. On the weekends the queue is more likely to be for a table, so get in early.
