Home made in Kensington

Claire Wiltshire 22 November 2008

The tree-lined streets of inner-city Kensington are crying out for good breakfast cafés. Weekends see the dog and stroller crowd out on the prowl for a coffee and plate of eggs, but while there are a few stalwart venues, many of them fall short of the mark.

Thankfully, a new(ish) place, simply named Made, offers something better than the norm. If you believe the first bite is with the eyes, you'll be nourished before you even step into this café. Pin Oak Crescent is a relic of its time, with poky old shops, angled as they weave around the curved street, preserved in their original style. Made plays it up, with rustic suitcases bursting with fresh fruit; an interior adorned with kitsch and homely artefacts; and a shopfront reminiscent of grandma's quaint old kitchen.

Made is proudly run by Margie and Gabriel who not only greet customers with enthusiasm, but cook their brekkie up right behind the counter. If the funky, homemade accessories, or the little extras like fresh orange and cucumber slices in the water jug aren't enough, a glance at the menu will really excite hungry breakfasters. Something special infuses the food here-everything that comes out of the makeshift kitchen tastes amazing!

The menu has a distinctly Spanish edge, offering a selection of intriguing breakfast options. The petite platters are enough to fill you up, but the emphasis is on quality ingredients rather than filler. The Heuvos Rojos is a favourite with customers; a baked egg dish with tomato, it is served with a piece of lightly toasted wheat-free bread, from a supplier two doors down.

Eggs are free-range and are served with an array of different sides, including a fine Jamon Serrano, tomato, and deliciously tangy lemon spinach topped with pine nuts. Salsa verde pops up on a few dishes and adds a refreshing grassy cleanliness to the array of rich flavours. Meals are a visual feast as well, with colours jumping right off the vintage-style plate.

Made brews its free trade organic coffee creamy, smooth and strong. But the fun part about ordering a few cups is surely sampling the mix-and-match crockery. Check out the daggy old teaspoons, each featuring a different holiday destination.

In keeping with the lazy neighbourhood vibe of Made's location, breakfast is served until 3 pm, so there's no need to rush. Squeeze yourself in and enjoy food with an edge.
