Welcome

An absolute gem, and that's no lie

Rowena Robertson 29 April 2008

Back in the day, Glenferrie Road Hawthorn was one of least vibrant retail strips in Melbourne, or so it seemed to me.  And even though in recent years the café culture there has improved, the area was yet to produce an eatery with that true inner city – dare I say hip – feel. That was until now and Liar Liar, of course.

Liar Liar is cool. The staff are cool, the décor (minimalist, but welcoming) is cool, even some of the clientele are cool. It's hard to believe that you're actually in Hawthorn quite frankly. And then there is the food – oh my.

The menu at Liar Liar is amazing. Some it even seems too good for breakfast. Let's start with their freshly made juices – how do you fancy a Purple Sunrise (beetroot, carrot, celery, apple, ginger), a Golden Pash (pineapple, apple, orange and strawberry) or a Fresh Start (apple, lime and mint)? Or you could try one of the myriad smoothies and milk shakes on the menu.

Then there is the incredible food. How about a serve of the ridiculously perfect toasted homemade banana and coconut bread with labneh (strained yoghurt), pistachios and roasted seasonal fruit (lots of rhubarb –yum)? Or you could try what I gather is Liar Liar's signature dish – the Liar Liar Scramble, a tasty concoction comprising tofu, spinach, olives, feta and herbs on five grain bread. The creamy labneh also pops up again with the bircher muesli, which also features poached seasonal fruit. Never has muesli slid down my gullet with so little effort.

I didn't try the orange and cinnamon French toast infused with caramelised apples, maple syrup and cream, but it sounded delicious. I did, however sample the (free range) poached eggs, whose yolks were runny, but not too runny.

My café latte was the ideal strength, flavoursome and invigorating. Clover coffee is also available. Meals are priced between $7 and $15. In summation, there's nothing not to like about Liar Liar. Get there and get munching – stat.
