When is a laundry no longer a laundry? When it starts curing its own trout.

Ellie Parker 5 May 2011

Skeptics can put away their skepticism. Armadale is now on the map when it comes to great breakfast.

Perfectly located on a peaceful trackside corner, this white washed ex-laundrette is a convivial intersection of ladies who lunch, yummy mummies and identity-bereft teenagers still trapped in the ‘burbs. Owners Matt Vero and Steve Rowley designed the fit out themselves and both take a hands on approach to the daily running of the business. The clean, open space combined with friendly young staff and exceptional kitchen talent all make this cafe a bright star in an otherwise dimly lit culinary patch.

Coin Laundry's all day breakfast, served till 3pm, moves way beyond the humble egg with its culinary reach. The breakfasts here are extraordinarily delicious, thanks to chef Eddie Atkins' inventive and consistent designs. The house-cured ocean trout comes with a potato rosti, perfectly poached egg, spinach and house-made beetroot relish. It easily slides into breakfast dish of the year territory. Ditto for the ricotta and sweet corn fritters with poached egg, avocado, and corn and tomato salsa. The Bircher is a beauty too. According to Vero, the Coin Laundry Breakfast (promoting the good old favourites of bacon, poached eggs, beet relish and smashed avo) walks out the door like nobody's business. These top rating attractions are a permanent mainstay on the menu, but there is also a subtle seasonal change throughout the year and Autumnal ingredients are about to hit the decks.

Allpress coffee guarantees a top quality caffeine hit and there's some funky froth art to boot. Coin Laundry takes the unusual step of grinding its decaf to order, which will come as a blessed relief to those who like to fake it with style. For the rest of us, we have the luxury of choice: Supremo or Single Origin.

Armadale has arrived. Who'da thought?
